It was a happy moment to see Pakistani actor Ali Kazmi’s post this morning where he shared the news of an Oscar nomination for the movie The Breadwinner. Ali, who currently lives in Canada, has provided the voice for one of the characters in this movie, which has been nominated in the category of Best Animated Feature Film for the 2018 Academy Awards.
Executive producer Angelina Jolie’s movie is an adaptation of a book by Canadian author Deborah Ellis about a 12 year old girl Afghan girl, Parwana, whose father is wrongfully imprisoned by the Taliban. She begins to dress up as a boy to provide for her family and reunite with her father, in a powerful and intense tale about life under Taliban rule. The film had also received a Golden Globe nomination.
Director of the film, Nora Twomey in a statement said that “at a time when women’s voices are coming to the forefront, the story of a young girl using her voice for what she believes in is more relevant than ever. Recognising stories like Parwana’s helps point to the importance of women and girls being heard around the world”
2017 has been a year about empowering women in Hollywood to stand up for themselves. It is certainly refreshing to see that trend being followed in their movies and being well received by the audience as well as the film fraternity. We would love to see more such stories come out in Indian and Pakistani cinema as well.
Ali Kazmi, of course, was thrilled to share the news with his followers. “I always knew it would be a special project when I first read for it! It’s a labour of love and am honored to be a part of the amazing people that brought it all together”
Ali Kazmi comes from a family of talented actors including television legend Rahat Kazmi and Sahira Kazmi. He will be seen in the television prequel of The Taken trilogy by Liam Neeson.
