The first in our series of beauty aids you can use straight from your kitchen.

We can all safely say that our grandmothers have a plethora of recipes and cures for the most random of things. Although I am a little sceptical about certain old wives tales, one thing I can say with confidence is that their hacks for hair couldn't be better!

I have tried and tested dozens of hair masks, and to describe them all would need more than a couple of pages in one article. Today’s headliner ingredient for hair masks is… yoghurt!!!

*An important thing to note before putting on any new ingredient is the importance of a patch test. To do this, rub a small amount of the ingredient onto your arm and wait 20-30 minutes. If no allergic reaction occurs, the element is safe to apply on your scalp or skin!

Yoghurt and Egg

This hair mask is perfect for anyone suffering from hair fall issues! Pairing yoghurt with eggs strengthens damaged hair, prevents hair fall and treats dandruff. Adding lemon juice to the hair mask cleanses the scalp.

Method: 1. Beat an egg in a bowl. 2. Add 4 Tbsp of yoghurt and 1 Tbsp of lemon juice to the bowl and mix it thoroughly. 3. Using a brush, apply the mask on your scalp and leave it on for about an hour. 4. Rinse off the mixture with your shampoo. *Make sure you don't use hot water unless you want scrambled eggs in your hair! (Trust me, it's not a pretty sight)

Yoghurt and Banana

Frizzy hair is a common concern amongst men and women worldwide. With this mask, you can significantly reduce frizz and make your hair soft and shiny. Bananas contain many vitamins and nutrients that nourish the hair, improve scalp health, reduce dandruff, and protect the hair's natural elasticity!

Method: 1. Mash half a ripe banana in a bowl until it is smooth. 2. Add 2 Tbsp of yoghurt, 3 tsp of honey and 1 tsp of lemon juice. 3. Mix the ingredients until it forms a consistent mixture. 4. Apply the mask from your roots until your hair's tips, and leave it on for 30-40 minutes.

Yoghurt and Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera truly is a miracle worker! Bursting with amino acids, the high protein content in aloe vera makes it the perfect moisturiser for your hair and strong roots.

Method: 1. Mix 3 Tbsp of fresh aloe vera gel, 3 Tbsp of yoghurt, 2 Tbsp of olive oil and 1 tsp of honey until it forms a smooth mixture. 2. Massage it into your scalp as well as applying it to the lengths of your hair. 3. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash your hair afterwards!

Choose any one of these recipes and let the yoghurt work its magic!
